description:
With the 57 appelations it is the most important wine growing area in France, extending over some 117 154 hectares. There are about 13 000 wine producers with the average year production about 800 millions bottles. Tle official classification of „Crus classés“ is dated from the 1855, when the first apellations – Medoc and Sauternes were classified on the Napoleons III. request. Every ten years the classification is reviewed.
The best red Bordeaux wines are slow to mature and need several years of aging in bottle. They are made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot varieties. It is customary for most red Bordeaux to be made from a bland of these varieties, depending on the soil and the subregion in which they are grown.
Bordeaux is also noted for its white wines, either dry or sweet botritys, made from Sauvignon, Semillon, Muscadelle, Ugni Blanc, Colombart and Merlot Blanc.
