Penedés
Penedés (Spain)
description: This is probably the best known wine region in Katalunia, where the progressive inovations and modern winemaking methods are taking place in order to enhance the quality of its wines. The vineyards covers almost 26 000 hectares with the average altitude between 0-1000 metres above sea level. The predominant grapes are Macabeo, Parellada and Chardonnay, giving soft, light wines with delicate fruit aromas. Red wines are silky textured and often aged in oak barrels and usually made from: Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Merlot, Garnacha and Carinena grapes. Some wineries are using another varieties: Moscatel, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminner or Pinot Noir. The most famous wine from this region is probably traditional sparkling wine called Cava. It is made with the same technology as the renowned Champagne. Cava is made according the strict new law valid from November 1991. The original Cava has four-tailed star signed on the bottom of the cork as a quarantee of authenticity. There are six types of Cava – Extra Brut (0-6 grams of sugar per litr), Brut (0-15g/l), Extra Seco (12-20g/l), Seco (17-35g/l), Semi-Seco (33-50g/l) and Dulce (more than 50g/l).There are also Cava vintage made in the good vintages.
