Languedoc-Roussillon
Languedoc-Roussillon (France)
description: Languedoc - Roussillon- the vineyards of Languedoc and Roussillon, the most ancient in France, have, without a doubt, shown the greatest progress in recent years. Stretching across the Gard, Hérauld, Aude, and Pyrénées-Orientales départements it covers about 40% of the total wine production in France almost in AOVDQS category. Small part of AOC wines (almost reds) is made in Corbières, Fitou, Minervois, Saint-Chinian, Faugères, Coteaux du Languedoc, Côtes du Roussillon a Côtes du Rousillon Village. There are also interesting white wines produced ( Picpoul de Pinet, La Clappe) and rosés. The best of Crémantes are produced in Blanquette and Crémant de Limoux AOC. Outstanding sweet wines are produced in Banyuls, Banyuls Grand Cru, Maury, Rivesaltes, Muscat de Rivesaltes, Muscat de Lunel, Muscat de Mireval, Muscat de Frontignan a Muscat de Saint-Jean-de-Minervois AOC. The common denominator is the Mediterranean climate – one of scorching heat, violent storms, and little rain. Yet there are great differences in microclimates due to factors such as wind and altitude. Some regions are dried by hot winds blowing down towards the sea, others enjoy cooling sea breezes blowing inland. Mountain vineyards have greater rainfall and far cooler nights than those on the plain, giving better acidity levels and finer aromatics to the grapes. Soils, as might be expected in such a large area, are very varied.
