description:
French region that has retained Germanic dialects and winegrowing tendencies. The vineyards extend over some 13 000 hectares, located on the eastern slopes of the Voges Mountains along the border with Germany, with the average attitude 200-400 metres above sea level. The limits of the region lie near the city of Strasbourgh on the north, and Mulhouse to the south. The average year rainfall is the lowest in France- about 500 mm. There is a warm, dry and sunny climat in Alsace, with long, dry and warm Autumn, giving healthy and vell riped grapes. Alsace is a unique French region in that the grape variety exceeds the growing area in importance. Certain select sites in the wine district are better than others, according to the geological diversity. Another major quality factor in Alsace is the shipper. Some firms have been in business for over a century, and each has its own quality standards, many of them more stringent then the law required. 93% of the production is white wines made from Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Tokay Pinot Gris, Muscat d`Alsace, Sylvaner and Pinot Blanc grapes and Pinot Noir for the red wines. Among the finest wines grown in Alsace are the late harvest „Vendange tardives“ and wines made from botritis grapes „Selection de grains nobles“ both worth to taste.
