World famous district known for its outstanding wines and gastronomy. With 110 appelations represent about one quarter of all france AOC ( Appéllation d`Origine Controlée). There are four main wine district: Chablis in the Yone, renowned for its fine white wines, is Burgundy`s most northerly region. Tle center of Burgundy is the Cóte d`Or, to the north and south of the city of Beaune, an area that produces some of the region`s most famous wines. In the Cóte d`Or fine red wines are made in the Cóte de Nuits, the northern section, and red and white wines are produced in the southern section – the Cóte de Beaune.
Further south are the Chalonnais and the Maconnais regions.
Beaujolais, in fact an independent region, is also classified as a part of Bourgogne.
56% of burgundy wines are sold as a generic „Bourgogne“ appelation, 30% appelation communale „village“, 12% Premieur Cru and 2% are Grand Crus.
The growing area of AOC is 24 000 hectares ( except Beaujolais with 22 000 hectares)
Burgundy`s best red wines are usually made from Pinot Noir, Gamay is used in Beaujolais. Chardonnay is a noble variety grown nearly everywhere in Burgundy, where it gives the best white wines. Secondary white wines are made from Aligoté.
Typically in Burgundy there are lots of small family operated wineries, hardly exceed 10 hectars of vineyards.
