description:
The reputation of the region was made in the late 19th century when Bordeaux négociants come here. They showed how to aged wine in a small barrels, and thus were born many of Haro`s most important bodegas. The region is divided into three regions: Rioja Alta in the western, higher part giving the elegant red and white wines. Rioja Alavesa, is Basque and, quite literally nawadays, is another country, with its own language. Rioja Baja, the extensive hotter, eastern section producing strong full-bodied wines.
Tempranillo is by far the most important grape of Rioja but it blends well with plumper Garnacha, fine but finicky Graciano and Mazuelo ( Carignan) is also allowed
