The vineyards cover some 59 000 hectares, spreading from Vienne on the north to the Avignon on the south, with the average year production of 2,9 milions hectolitres. The wines tend to be full-flavoured: reds are robust and whites are powerful and long-lived. The lively, stylish rosés are among the best in France.
Tle principal red Rhone grapes are Syrah, the only variety used in the northern district, and Grenache, pre-dominant in the southern part. The other grapes are Mourvedre, Cinsault, Carignan for the reds and Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc for the whites.
There are 13 Crus in the Cotes du Rhone.
8 in the northern part: Cote Rotie (red), Condrieau (white), Chateau Grillet (white), Saint Joseph ( red and white), Crozes Hermitage (red and white), Hermitage ( red and white), Cornas (red) and Saint-Péray (white)
5 in the southern part: Gigondas (red and white), Vacqueyras (red, white and rosé), Chateauneuf du Pape (red and white), Lirac (red, white and rosé) and Tavel (rosé).
There are also world famous VDN ( naturaly sweet wines) in the southern part: Beaumes de Venice and Rasteau and sparkling wines from Saint-Péray and Clairette-de-Die.
